Toothache and Headache are Linked

The Causes of Toothaches

The most common cause of toothaches in patients today is from a dental cavity. Sometimes you’d say it’s a toothache when your gums or even your jaw are hurting. There are other causes, though, for toothache, such as cracked teeth, exposed roots and nerves. In some cases, infections in the ears and sinuses and even heart disease can cause pain in your mouth.

There are patients who experience headaches simultaneously with tooth pain. Experts say that one of the main causes of migraine headaches is from an extended toothache. Due to the presence of nerves in our face, especially in our mouth, there is a constant transmission of impulses back and forth between the brain and our tissues. The largest and most complex nerve systems found in our head is the trigeminal nerve, supplying sensations to the face, mucous membranes, and other structures of the head.

It is the motor nerve for the muscles of chewing, biting and grinding food. One of its branches supply the upper jaw, through the cheekbone, most of the nose, upper lip and upper teeth. The other branch innervates the lower jaw, lower cheek, lower lip and teeth.

Due to this connection, most toothaches can be direct causes of headaches. However, careful diagnosis is essential that such headaches are due to teeth problems and not because of a condition called trigeminal neuralgia, often confused with a toothache. There are other reactions to toothaches, such as when one grinds his teeth during sleep, or habitually tightens his jaws, can eventually lead to headaches, as well. If your head starts to ache because of a tooth problem, a dental visit can readily remedy that. Better to seek help from your dentist to really make a proper diagnosis.
